Wow, I'm getting alot of mileage from my ocean wave analogy of Gary's playing. Gary, if you're still on, I LOVE your playing with Level 42. To say that Phil Gould's playing is better or worse, is like saying that Steve Smith's version of Steps Ahead's "Oops" is better than Peter's version on the original (By the way, I've been listening to that Steps Ahead post of "Islands" - man, what subtlety and taste. The more I advance as a player, the more I appreciate Peter's control, touch, ideas, and where he comes from as a player, but I'm getting off topic here, sorry!) . As far as Level 42, it was two great players interpreting the same piece differently. Like Picasso and Van Gough each looking at a fruit bowl, and painting it.

Take for instance the Level 42 album Guaranteed. I thought it was such a refreshing, cool change to hear Holdsworth solo in that format (I thought he did a great job, too), and to hear some instrumental virtuosity added to the mix, in addition to Mark King's bass virtuosity. The same goes with what Gary brought to their sound. Another example that sticks in my mind is the Live at Wembley album. The first track I heard a cool groove, and then these muscular, blazing, single stroke rolls down the toms. (Ah.... Gary.....).

Like the sexy Curves of a Lamborghini, but underneath beats the heart of a 500 HP V-12.

Gary, I remember reading some posts on your website a few years back, about how you were re-asessing your role as a drummer, and contemplating getting away from drumming (obviously you've reconsidered). However, know that you've played a hugely important part in the development of alot of drummers (myself included - "The Un-Merry Go Round" was an anthem of sorts for me both drumming wise, and musically).

By the way, I still have a devil of a time figuring out your phrasing on that triplet feel tom-fill at the beginning of Holdsworth's Dodgy Boat off Wardenclyffe Tower!
